PUBLIC BEACH ACCESS RESTORED IN TULUM’S JAGUAR PARK

public beach access restored

In a historic moment for Tulum, officials have restored a public beach access near Mirador Templo, located at the southern end of the Tulum–Boca Paila coastal highway. For years, this path—leading to a quiet cove inside Jaguar National Park—remained closed under private control. Now, its return not only gives the community back a vital space but also strengthens transparency, equity, and public rights.

DETAILS OF THE REOPENING

  • Location: Southern end of Tulum–Boca Paila highway, inside Jaguar Park.
  • History: This was once the entrance to Gitano Beach, a private club later relocated near Sian Ka’an.
  • Importance: It’s the first of three public access points set to reopen, as confirmed by local advocate Armando Galera.

HOW WAS IT ACHIEVED?

Thanks to strong collaboration between different government levels and public pressure, this victory became possible:

  1. Federal authorities (CONANP and other agencies) backed the move.
  2. TTulum’s local government, led by Mayor Diego Castañón, took action.
  3. Residents and activists fought for years to reclaim this space.

This success proves that when political will and community demands unite, real change follows.

BENEFITS FOR THE COMMUNITY

The reopening brings major benefits:

  • Free beach access after years of restrictions.
  • Public transportation: Routes from Super Aki are planned to facilitate access without a car.
  • Important precedent: Halts coastal privatization and reinforces the right to public spaces.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Tulum has struggled with:

  • Beaches taken over by private interests.
  • Rising gentrification pushing locals out.
  • Loss of public spaces.

Now, this win sets an example for other battles in the region.
